Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani has expressed Qatar’s reservations over the final communiqués of the Arab and Gulf summits held in Makkah recently.
In an interview with Al Araby TV on Sunday, the FM said, “The statements of the emergency Gulf and Arab summits, which Saudi Arabia had called for, were prepared in advance and we were not consulted on them.”
“Qatar expresses reservations about the statements of the Arab and Gulf summits as some of the items (in the final communiqués) are contrary to the foreign policy of Doha,” the FM said.
He said, “The Makkah summits ignored the most important issues in the region such as the question of Palestine and the war in Libya and Yemen.”
In another interview with Al Jazeera, the FM said, “The final communiqués of the Makkah summits would have ignored the Palestinian cause had the issue not been raised by the Palestinian delegation.”
“The Gulf summit’s statement talked about a unified Gulf but where is it amid the continuation of Qatar’s blockade?” he asked.
The FM said, “The blockading countries pressed neighbouring countries to stand against Qatar. And they punished Somalia for maintaining ties with us.”
On Libya, he said, “Qatar supported the internationally-recognised government in Libya. But there are countries that recognise the reconciliation government and at the same time support the other forces.”
“The summits adopted Washington’s policy towards Iran and not one that takes the neighbourhood into consideration,” he said, adding that the two statements condemned Iran without referring to an intermediate policy to talk to Tehran.
Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani participated in the Emergency GCC Summit, Arab Extraordinary Summit and the 14th Islamic Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation.
