60-year-old man caught with 8kg drugs at Dubai airport

He told the inspectors that it was his bag, but said he had nothing to do with the drugs found inside.

A British man, who was caught with more than 7kg of cocaine at the Dubai airport, stood trial on Monday.

The Court of First Instance was told that the 60-year-old man, who was transiting through the Dubai International Airport, was caught on May 11 trying to smuggle the drugs. He pleaded not guilty at court, claiming he had nothing to do with the substance found in his possession.

A customs inspector, who was on duty at Terminal 3, said the accused was on his way to Guinea from Brazil via Dubai. "We passed him to the inspection point after his luggage went through the X-ray system and we had doubts he could be carrying some banned substance. He told the inspectors it was his bag, but said he had nothing to do with the drugs found inside."

The defendant claimed then to the customs officers he had picked up the drugs from a man in Sao Paolo and was to deliver it to someone in Guinea.

He was referred later to the general directorate of narcotics and the drugs were seized.

A report from the general directorate of criminal evidence and criminology said the drugs seized from the traveler was cocaine and weighed 7.8kg.

A court ruling will be pronounced on August 9.
