Modernizing Urban Traffic Flow
For decades, Al Satwa Roundabout served as a highly familiar Dubai landmark. It helped motorists navigate one of the city’s busiest and most established neighbourhoods. Now, the famous roundabout has made way for a modern traffic intersection. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the completion of the project on Wednesday. The new signal-controlled intersection promises faster journeys and significantly shorter traffic queues. The conversion forms part of wider road improvements aimed at easing daily congestion. The RTA wants to improve connectivity across the entire rapidly growing city. The transformation marks a significant change to a vital road junction.
Reducing Congestion During Peak Hours
Al Satwa represents a bustling neighbourhood filled with residential communities and busy shops. According to RTA data, the new intersection reduced average journey times by 50 percent. Waiting times and traffic queues fell by up to 60 percent during peak hours. Conventional roundabouts frequently experience severe congestion as traffic volumes increase locally. Replacing the roundabout allows authorities to regulate vehicle movements much more systematically. This helps reduce long delays and improves traffic distribution across the area. The intersection handles vehicles travelling along 2nd December Street towards the Trade Centre. It provides improved access to Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai’s main transport artery.
Improving Bus And Pedestrian Access
The redesigned intersection also improves public bus movement into and out of Al Satwa. This helps local public transport services operate with far fewer daily delays. The signalised junction also improves safety for pedestrians crossing roads in the busy area. The project complements the massive World Trade Centre Roundabout Development Project nearby. The RTA coordinates these improvements to distribute traffic more efficiently across neighbouring intersections. This proactive approach reduces the heavy pressure placed on individual junctions during rush hour. Navigate daily life in the Emirates with our timely local updates.
