Two Belgian Malinois Dogs Join The Fight Against Poaching

Emirates SkyCargo recently flew two specialist conservation dogs from London to Zimbabwe. The dogs have started frontline preparations to track illegal poaching activity. They will operate deep inside the Matusadona National Park. The two Belgian Malinois dogs are named Vega and Kuda. Emirates transported them to Harare via Dubai in partnership with the UK charity Dogs 4 Wildlife. Both dogs have successfully acclimatized to their new African operating environment.

Intensive Training For A Dangerous Job

Vega and Kuda form the park’s first specialist conservation K9 team. They are currently undergoing advanced integration training alongside local park rangers. Within a month of arriving, the dogs completed 185 hours of practical training. They worked directly with six specialist K9 handlers. The dogs successfully executed more than 60 human-scent tracking exercises. They easily demonstrated their ability to follow trails linked to suspected poachers. The program also introduced strict welfare and Standard Operating Protocols for the animals. This creates a safe operating framework for the new K9 unit.

A Global Push Against Wildlife Trafficking

The K9 unit will work alongside rangers to stop illegal wildlife activity. Emirates SkyCargo maintains a strict total ban on transporting hunting trophies. The airline trains its frontline teams globally to identify wildlife trafficking risks. Emirates is a founding signatory of the Buckingham Palace Declaration. The company works closely with United for Wildlife to combat illegal trafficking. The airline recently hosted a workshop in Dubai focused on the illegal wildlife trade.
