Emirati woman speaks about donating kidney to save father

A 33-year-old Emirati woman saved her father's life by donating her kidney, which she said was "the greatest moment" of her life.

Sara Juma Al Rayssi told Khaleej Times that her 66-year-old father was suffering from kidney disease for 10 years.

On December 13, 2017, the young woman decided to take a life-changing decision and undergo a procedure where doctors implant one of her kidneys in her father. "My siblings and I said that as long as we are alive, we will never put our father through dialysis. We are 10 siblings and he had 20 kidneys to choose from," Sara said.

Her father initially refused to consider taking any of his children's kidneys, but he finally gave in. The 10 siblings were tested to see who would be the best donor match. "Thank God it was me," said Sara.

I feel I am sharing half of my health with my father, which is the greatest thing I've ever done in my life. It's as if life has returned to him and we can see it in his face and his eyes."

Less than 6 months after the transplant, Sara is back to normal life. She is fasting in Ramadan and even drives between Al Ain to Abu Dhabi for work every day.

"My mission in life now is to raise awareness about organ donation. If you can do it, then you should do it, because nothing will change in your life. However, you will be giving life to someone else."
