How to Exchange Your Foreign Driving License in Dubai

New Dubai residents want to get on the road quickly. The Roads and Transport Authority allows eligible expats to exchange foreign driving licenses. This process saves you significant time and money.

Who Qualifies for the Exchange?

The RTA approves licenses from over 50 different countries. Eligible nations include all five GCC countries and 38 European states. Several Asian and North American countries also make the list.

The RTA replaced over 58,000 foreign driving licenses just last year.

Meeting the Strict Requirements

Applicants must hold a completely valid foreign driving license. The RTA also requires a mandatory eye test for everyone. You can complete this test at accredited customer happiness centers easily.

Eye test fees generally range between 140 and 180 dirhams locally. Some foreign licenses require additional official translation certificates from their embassies.

What If Your Country Is Not Listed?

You can still obtain a Dubai driving license regardless of your nationality. However, you must follow the standard driving school process completely. You will enroll at an approved institute and pass mandatory driving tests.

GCC nationals face very simple rules for their exchanges. They simply surrender their original valid license to receive the local Dubai version.
