Indian farmer in UAE breaks world record

In a bid to educate young children on the importance of going green, Sharjah-based organic farming enthusiast Sudheesh Guruvayoor broke yet another world record. On World Environment Day, Sudheesh distributed 4,916 curry leaf saplings to students of Sharjah Indian School, earning him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The previous record for 'most saplings distributed' also took place at the Gurunank Darbar in Dubai, where 2,083 saplings were distributed. The saplings are entirely organic and no pesticides of any kind have been used to grow them.

Sudheesh, however, has dedicated this honour and prize to the father of the nation Sheikh Zayed. Inspired by the Year of Zayed and baba Zayed's love for agriculture, Sudheesh worked on this record-breaking initiative for over three months.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Sudheesh said, "This is the year of Zayed, and he was an avid farming enthusiast and was very keen on boosting local agriculture. He dreamt of a green UAE and I'm just proud and honoured that I've been able to contribute a little bit to that dream."

The curry leaves were grown in Sudheesh's organic garden in Sharjah, and branches were cut from the main tree and placed into saplings. The students have been encouraged to grow them, and the best curry leaf plant at the end of three months will be given an award. "I am also doing this to encourage the habit of eating organic among students," he added.
