Drunk driver sprays deodorant in mouth to fool police

He was intercepted by police on suspicion of drunk driving.

A drunk driver in South Carolina sprayed deodorant in his mouth as a makeshift breath freshener to mislead police. The man came up with the bizarre idea when he was intercepted by police on suspicion of drunk driving.

Efren Mencia-Ramirez, 49, sped past a police car in South Carolina's Spartanburg County before pulling over into another lane. When he saw officers approaching, he resorted to last minute perfumery and sprayed a can of Axe (branded as Lynx in the UK). However, he did not realize that Lynx body sprays typically contain alcohol, making his attempted concealment methods all the more futile, reported MSN.

But officers caught Mencia-Ramirez spraying deodorant into his mouth to cover the smell of alcohol in his breath. However, he smelled of alcohol and exhibited signs of intoxication while talking to officers, the police report stated. Officers also recovered an open can of beer held between his legs and nine empty cans on the floor while another was open and full and one remained unopened.

Mencia-Ramirez was arrested on suspicions of driving under the influence and a breath sample test indicating he was almost twice over the legal limit for operating a vehicle in South Carolina. He was charged with driving under the influence, having an open container, no proof of insurance and no valid driver's license.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that an estimated 10,874 people were killed in drunk driving crashes in 2017.
