A Bipartisan Pushback
A bipartisan group of six US senators issued a strong statement on Sunday. They called for the Trump administration to immediately reverse its latest energy plan. Trump wants to purchase massive amounts of diesel fuel directly from Russia. He claims this effort will help lower incredibly high domestic fuel prices. Trump shocked lawmakers when he announced the controversial deal on social media Friday. He stated he struck the deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin personally. Russia will supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the American market immediately. They will deliver an additional 500,000 tons in November under the agreement.
Violating Existing Sanctions
Four Republican senators and two Democratic senators signed the protest statement. They said the administration completely failed to consult with Congress beforehand. They noted Trump failed to submit any explanation to justify the sudden decision. The senators argued the US should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline. Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians, making the deal morally unacceptable. The Republican senators include Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis, and John Curtis. The Democratic senators include Jeanne Shaheen and Richard Blumenthal. Tillis discussed the controversy during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Balancing Domestic Costs And Foreign Policy
He stated the administration is not following the law regarding international sanctions. Congress recently passed legislation directing Trump to impose substantial tariffs on Russian fuel. The lawmakers noted Congress explicitly banned Russian energy imports back in 2022. They want to prevent the United States from financing the ongoing war entirely. Trump has sought to blame record US diesel prices on the situation in Ukraine. He faces massive pressure to reduce domestic costs ahead of the midterm elections.
