Northern Chile’s Atacama Desert is traditionally one of the driest places on Earth. However, it has recently transformed into a vibrant carpet of beautiful wildflowers. The event only occurs when sufficient rainfall saturates the arid ground. This water triggers dormant seeds buried deep beneath the desert soil. The bleak landscape suddenly bursts into a spectacular display of vivid color. Flowers appear quickly across vast stretches of the normally barren terrain.
