A 19-year-old female Greek model was arrested at the Hong Kong International Airport for trying to smuggle US $300,000 worth of illegal drugs.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the woman flew in from Ethiopia on Monday, November 20, when she was subjected to a routine inspection.
The Customs police discovered around 2.6 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a false compartment of her backpack.
The female model was then escorted out of the airport by the police in handcuffs. The Customs and Excise Department said she has since been charged with one count of trafficking in illegal drugs and has appeared before the West Kowloon court.
Reports said the Greek model is the fourth female visitor this week arrested by Customs police for trying to smuggle drugs into Hong Kong.
One of the three other women came from Peru via The Netherlands, while the other two arrived from Tanzania via Ethiopia.
Authorities are now investigating whether the four women were recurited as drug mules by the same drug trafficking syndicate operating in the region.
“We believe the [seized drugs] were for local consumption. It is possible drug dealers tried to stock up on illegal drugs ahead of festive season,” a source privy to the investigation told SCMP.
