Boosting Cross-Border Trade
A massive new four-lane road bridge linking China and North Korea finally opened today. The structure arrives 12 years late but promises to increase cross-border trade substantially. China remains its isolated, nuclear-armed neighbor's absolute largest trading partner globally. Beijing provides vital diplomatic and political backing to the ruling Kim dynasty. Hundreds of people gathered in the northern Chinese border town of Dandong on Thursday. They took selfies in front of the 3,026-metre New Yalu River vehicle bridge. Trucks bearing the nations' flags began moving in both directions by late morning. Reporters noted that several North Korean vehicles crossed the bridge decorated with bright flowers.
Overcoming Long Construction Delays
Chinese Premier Li Qiang stated the bridge symbolizes Beijing's deep friendship with Pyongyang. He declared that bilateral relations are currently entering a highly promising new stage. The bridge will strongly boost economic and trade cooperation between the two allied countries. Workers originally completed the massive physical structure back in 2014. However, a lack of connecting roads and customs facilities caused massive operational delays. North Korea also sealed its borders tightly during the global Covid-19 pandemic. Train journeys between the East Asian neighbors only restarted in March after a six-year halt. The new structure supersedes the extremely narrow Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge located downstream.
Monitoring Geopolitical Developments
Transporting heavy cargo across the aging bridge required extreme caution previously due to safety concerns. Experts believe the new crossing will triple or quadruple cargo traffic efficiently. This opening occurred a day after North Korea test-fired two types of cruise missiles. The two Koreas engaged in a tit-for-tat series of aggressive missile tests recently. South Korea's unification ministry confirmed Seoul is monitoring the new bridge situation closely. North Korea has not yet resumed issuing tourism visas to Chinese citizens.
