In this modern period of time, selfies became a part of our daily routine; it became a part of our system – to update our social media accounts so that people, especially our relatives located far away, will always be updated with our lives.
However, despite the positive effects selfie has brought to our lives, there are still negative effects that might cause danger, and worse, may cost our lives.
Recently, a 16-year-old Indonesian teen had serious head injuries when she and her friends went to take a selfie at a railway located in Purworejo, Indonesia on December 6. According to World of Buzz, the teenager was named Ely Hayati.
She and her friend stopped by the railway track, then one of her friends took a selfie stick to take a group photo. Without noticing, a train suddenly rushes by. Ely was hit by train’s force then she flies forward a few meters away from her friends; her head banged against the concrete and she suffered heavy bleeding on her head.
Luckily, the nearby residents and paramedics came to rescue her when her friends panicked and asked for help. She was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. Fortunately, she survived and her condition was already stable although she is still in the ICU.
This is a lesson learned that we must not risk our lives just to take one quick photo. We do hope that Ely’s condition will progress and hopefully recover soon.
