A Blame Game Over Satellite Access
Recent efforts to throttle Ukraine’s access to vital satellite systems created a massive blame game. Trump administration officials and their allies have offered highly mixed messages. They cannot explain what led to the sudden restrictions on Kyiv's communication abilities. The limitations placed on Starshield alarmed the country's military commanders last week. Commanders reported losing crucial drones and facing severely disrupted defensive missions. After days of handwringing, President Donald Trump asserted the service is running again. Questions have percolated regarding who ordered the sudden interruptions to the Elon Musk-made system. Trump maintained repeatedly that he didn’t make the call personally.
Officials Deny Direct Involvement
Vice President JD Vance hinted at White House coordination with Musk regarding the issue. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denied any administration involvement. Musk indicated that questions should be directed entirely to the Pentagon. Musk stated that Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the US government. He wrote that limits on speed are decided by the US military and POTUS. He distinguished this from Starlink, which is a commercial service controlled by SpaceX. “I don’t know if it was anybody, but it wasn’t me,” Trump stated Friday. Trump demurred when asked if he had requested Musk to lift the cap.
Ukraine Demands Answers
Secretary of State Marco Rubio insisted the US government had nothing to do with it. He suggested that the owner of the system may have been involved. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been working frantically to reverse the restrictions. Zelenskyy said there were no similar restrictions placed on European Union countries. “In other words, this is a planned operation,” Zelenskyy stated bluntly.
