12-year-old boy survives Indonesia plane crash, eight bodies found

A plane crash in Indonesia on Saturday has resulted in the death of eight people, out of the nine onboard.

The Swiss-made Pilatus aircraft was carrying seven passengers and two crew members.

A 12-year-old boy is a sole survivor in the plane that crashed in mountainous eastern Indonesia.

"Eight passengers were found dead and one was found alive," Papua military spokesman Lieutenant colonel Dax Sianturi said.

The privately owned charter company Dimonim Air crashed after it lost contact with air traffic control.

The national transportation safety committee is investigating to find the cause of the crash.

The villagers in the nearby Okatem heard a loud roar followed by an explosion before the plane crashed.

The remnants of the plane were found in a heavily forested area on a mountainside in the Oksibil subdistrict.

The rescue team who recovered the bodies late morning had to walk two hours to reach the crash site.

Indonesia relies heavily on air transport to connect its thousands of islands but has a poor aviation safety record and has suffered several fatal crashes in recent years.

Papua is a particularly difficult area to reach.
