Bengaluru: Overnight Rains Wreck Havoc

With flooded roads, cars submerged in water, power cuts, and water flooding into the homes of Bengalureans, this downpour in mid-August has been the heaviest in Bengaluru in the last 100 years. This downpour took over the city overnight and has wrecked havoc all around. The rainfall was recorded at 180 mm in about three hours.

 

According to BBMP Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad, disrupted power supply, uprooted trees and poles, broken sheds, and damaged homes were the effects of this torrential rain. Using make-shift boats, civic officials rescued stranded people in flooded areas. The flooded city was a chaotic mess and traffic was out of control.
 
According to the Meteorological Department, the city last saw rainfall this heavy in August 1890 at a recorded 166 mm in one day. As per Scientist CN Prabhu of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre, the weather monitoring system they had not anticipated the rainfall to be this heavy. The rainfall was easily 3-4 times heavier than they had predicted. He added that given that monsoons have arrived, heavy rain is not a surprise.
