The coronavirus positive cases across the world crossed 2,400,000 and the death toll topped 165,000 on Sunday since an outbreak that started in Wuhan, China, in early December. The number of recovered cases from coronavirus, too, has increased to 3,865,864.

The United States remains the country with the most number of coronavirus positive cases and the deaths due to the infection. However, New York City, the epicenter of Covid-19 infection in the country, on Sunday saw some progress in its battle against the coronavirus.

The governor of New York said the outbreak in the city was "on the descent" as the coronavirus death toll in the city dropped again.

Europe, too, saw encouraging signs on Sunday with many countries reporting a drop in the number of coronavirus cases and the deaths. The continent accounts for almost two-thirds of the 160,000 fatalities.

In terms of coronavirus positive cases, the United States is followed by Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Turkey and then, China.

As for the number of deaths due to Covid-19, America tops this chart as well since its fatalities crossed 40,000 on Sunday as more people succumbed to the virus. It is followed by Italy (23,660), Spain (20,453), France (19,744) and the United Kingdom (16,095).

As a new day begins for us to continue the battle against the novel coronavirus, which has brought the world economy to a standstill, here is what's happening in the world and how other countries are faring in their combat against the virus:

1. Governors in US states hardest hit by the novel coronavirus sparred with President Donald Trump over his claims they have enough tests and should quickly reopen their economies as more protests are planned over the extension of stay-at-home orders.

2. New York continued to see hospitalizations decline to 16,000 from a high of 18,000, and the number of patients being kept alive by ventilators also fell. There were 507 new deaths, down from a high of more than 700 a day.

3. Britain is not considering lifting its lockdown imposed almost four weeks ago to control the coronavirus outbreak given “deeply worrying” increases in the death toll, a senior minister said on Sunday. Britain is at or near the peak of a health crisis in which more than 16,000 people have died after testing positive for the novel coronavirus, a rise of 596 from Saturday.

4. South Korea extended its social distancing policy for another 16 days on Sunday but offered some relief for churches and sporting fixtures, as it reported just eight new coronavirus infections, the lowest in two months. It was the first time since Feb. 18 that South Korea reported a single-digit daily rise in new infections. The figure brings its total cases to 10,661.

5. France registered 395 more deaths from the coronavirus on Saturday, bringing the total to 19,718, as the pace of increase in fatalities continued to slow and the number of people in intensive care fell. The total number of people in intensive care units fell for the 11th day in a row, to 5,744 - the lowest level since March 30.

6. The total number of people killed by the coronavirus in Canada rose by just under 12% to 1,506 in a day, official public health agency data showed on Sunday. The figure for those diagnosed with the coronavirus had climbed to 33,922.

7. United States President Donald Trump says he will use the Defense Production Act to increase the manufacturing of swabs used to test for the coronavirus.

8. "Minuscule traces" of the new coronavirus have been found in Paris's non-potable water -- such as the supply used for cleaning streets -- but drinking water is at no risk of contamination, a city official said Sunday.

9. Pakistan on Sunday reported 869 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the number of the COVID-19 patients to 8,348 in the country. The worst-hit Punjab province reported 3,822 patients, Sindh 2,537, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa 1,137, Balochistan 376, Gilgit-Baltistan 257, Islamabad 171 and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir 48, taking the total tally to 8,348.

10. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Sunday extended by two weeks a lockdown imposed on March 30 to curb the spread of Covid-19 which has killed three in the country. The country has reported only 25 cases since the outbreak was reported in China.
