Director Atlee celebrates his 40th birthday today amid a highly successful career. He has directed five commercial feature films, all achieving significant box office success. His latest release, Jawan, earned approximately ₹1,150 crore worldwide. This film provided actor Shah Rukh Khan with the biggest numbers of his career. Atlee was born Arun Kumar in Thiruparankundram, near Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

He studied visual communications at Sathyabama University in Chennai. He started his career by making a short film called En Mel Vizhundha Mazhaithuli. This short film helped him secure an apprenticeship with prominent director S Shankar. He worked as an assistant director on Enthiran and the 2012 film Nanban. He made his directorial debut at age 26 with the romantic drama Raja Rani.

A Proven Track Record Of Blockbuster Hits

The 2013 film earned more than ₹50 crore at the box office. He then directed a highly successful trilogy of films starring actor Vijay. Theri, Mersal, and Bigil established him as a bankable young director. Jawan marked his first Hindi film, taking his work beyond southern India. His upcoming sixth film, Raaka, stars Allu Arjun and Deepika Padukone.

It is a visual effects-led science fiction action film currently in development. The studio developed the project with visits to VFX studios in Los Angeles. Sun Pictures marked his birthday with a message praising his grand storytelling. Atlee also runs his own successful production company, A for Apple Studios. He has backed several films, including the Hindi remake of Theri, Baby John.

He married actress Priya Mohan in 2014, and the couple has two children. His working circle has stayed remarkably stable across his five films. Fans eagerly anticipate the motion capture reveal for his upcoming project.
