The Indian government bleeds its own desperate citizens for cash. New Delhi just approved a massive hike in mandatory passport fees. The Ministry of External Affairs raised the costs by seventy-five percent. Millions of Indian migrant workers live and sweat in the UAE. They build the glittering cities while earning pathetic, meager wages. Now their home country demands extortionate fees just to renew their travel documents. A standard sixty-page passport renewal now costs significantly more money. A replacement for a lost passport carries absolutely punishing financial penalties.

A New Tax on the Poor

The government hired a new private contractor to process these applications. The state claims this transition will improve bureaucratic efficiency. In reality, they simply found a new way to tax the poor. Bureaucrats sit in air-conditioned offices and extract wealth from the working class.
