India is finally warming up to the idea of high-speed connectivity by rail. Bullet trains are a common sight in many parts of the world. The government of India is continuing its good work in recent times with regards to infrastructure projects. The Golden Quadrilateral Project has been a mega success and now with a new 1,10,000 crore project, the government is set to build India’s first bullet train.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project will cover a total distance of 508 km with an initial capacity of carrying 750 passengers on board. There are plans to increase this number 1,200 passengers with the addition of more coaches. It currently takes up to 8 hours to cover the distance between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The new trains promise to bring down the travel time to a little more than 2 hours. The train will operate at a top speed of 320 kph though it is designed to travel at 350 kph.
The initial plan is to run 35 trains every day in one direction. 36,000 people are expected to benefit from this new bullet train on a daily basis.
About 88,000 crores will be financed in the form of a soft loan from Japan for a period of 50 years at 0.1 percent interest rate per annum. The project is set to be completed by August 2022.
