The heart was airlifted 1,615 kms from Surat to Chennai in 155 minutes.
Organs of a deceased Indian teacher in Surat have given a new lease of life to three persons, including a 14-year-old from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The heart of Parimal Parimal Muljibhai Bhagat, aged 43, was airlifted 1,615 kms to Chennai's Fortis Malar Hospital in 155 minutes on Saturday. It was then transplanted into the body of the teenager, Khadija Abdullah Obidallah, a heart ailment patient since long, according to a report in The Times of India.

Bhagat was a teacher at the Nagar Prathamik Shiskan Samiti School, run by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).  On March 2, he complained of a severe headache in the wee hours and his wife Jagruti applied an ointment to ease his pain.

He did not wake up till 9 am the next day, his parents shifted him to BAPS Hospital. The CT scan and other reports suggested he had suffered a brain hemorrhage and blood clotting, the story reports. He was declared brain-dead on March 3.

Soon, the team members of Donate Life met his wife and convinced her to donate Bhagat's organs. After a search for patients matching the deceased's profile, Khadija was shortlisted as a recipient of his heart. Apart from his heart, his kidneys have helped the lives of two other patients at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre in Ahmedabad.
