The Union Government has announced a massive overhaul of the Indian Army intended to enhance the Army's combat potential. 57,000 soldiers will be re-deployed in combat positions for the first time in the military history of independent India.
As per the Defence Minister Arun Jaitley, this decision was made by the government to improve the ratio of personnel required to support a soldier in combat. Reportedly, the process of this reconstruction will be over by December 2019.
With 40,525 officers, and 1.15 million other ranks a reconstruction is in order, and it will result in the shutdown of military farms and army postal units in peace stations. The departments of logistics, communications establishments, repair facilities, ordnance depots and other administrative and support areas will also be going through a massive reconstruct.
Headed by retired lieutenant general DB Shekatkar an 11 member committee was called to discuss the army's combat potential and reducing the expenses. The committee recommended ways of cutting down day-to-day expenses and sourcing more money for weapons and equipment.
After the Cabinet decision on Wednesday, the Defense Ministry is set to implement the first 65 recommendations out of 99, the rest are to be implemented by the Indian Air Force, Navy. A total of 188 suggestions were made by the panel, out of which 99 were accepted by the government in March.
