According to various media reports, hundreds of people had gathered around the area for effigy burning, when a train ran over them, crushing many of them including women and children to death. At least 300 people were at the spot watching 'Ravan Dahan', sources said.
A crowd of Dussehra revellers that had spilled onto railway tracks while watching burning of Ravana effigy was run over by a train near here, officials said.
The preliminary report suggests the incident took place following a stampede during Dussehra celebrations, Northern Railways PRO told CNN News18.
