New Prime Minister Elected By Pakistan Lawmakers

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is set to replace Nawaz Sharif as new Prime Minister after Sharif’s corruption probe.

Abbasi took over on Tuesday, however Sharif’s ruling party says that Abbasi should serve only temporarily. They are waiting for Sharif's younger brother Shahbaz to qualify which might take up to 45 days. The opponents believe this is an undemocratic step.

With five candidates for the office nominated by opposition group, Abbasi stood the strongest with 221 of 342 votes in the assembly.

According to his address on TV, he will be putting his best efforts forth, until the next general elections in June or for however long he stays.

However, Abbasi got emotional during his speech and supported former Prime Minister Sharif saying that he was wrongly targeted.

As soon as Abbasi was sworn in, supporters of former PM Sharif celebrated and danced with posters of Sharif in clear display.
