With Ram Nath Kovind set to take his post as the 14th President of India, today was Pranab Mukherjee's last day at office.

The 13th President of India gave his last speech today at the Central Hall of the Parliament to an audience of Parliamentarians and thanked them for their support.

Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Vice-President Hamid Ansari recounted his contributions.

"As President, I've tried to protect, preserve, defend the Constitution, not just in letter but in spirit as well. Ordinance route should only be adopted in compelling circumstances," said Pranab Mukherjee.

Pranab Mukherjee, in his last speech as President, implored all Parliamentarians to uphold the values of the Constitution as it represents the "hopes and aspirations of a billion people".

He thanked PM Modi, who was also an attendee, for bringing "transformational changes" in India.

He also remembered his "mentor" Indira Gandhi, whom he called a "towering personality".

"My career was mentored by Mrs Indira Gandhi who was a towering personality. She had the courage to call a spade a spade," said Mukherjee, recalling an incident involving the press and Indira Gandhi in London, after the Congress's defeat post Emergency.

Hamid Ansari and Sumitra Mahajan pay their respects

Vice-President Hamid Ansari said that Pranab Mukherjee's "rich valuable legacy" and his "views on national, international issues have enhanced the stature of the top office".

He added that Mukherjee had brought great distinction and dignity to his office.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan asked all those present to take the farewell as a solemn occasion to express profound respect for the President.
