As the Emperor approved, Japan's Princess Mako formally announced her engagement to a commoner, which also means that the Princess loses her royal status.
Japan's Imperial Household Agency gave the formal announcement on Sunday, while local media had reported in May the news of this engagement.
Kei Komuro, the fiancé of Princess Mako, is 25-years-old and works at a law firm. The couple studied at the same university where they met and fell in love. Princess Mako, who is also 25-years-old and the eldest child of Prince Fumihito, is pursuing a doctorate while working as a museum researcher.
The announcement was to be made in July, however, a rain calamity in western Japan, postponed the announcement. According to the public broadcaster NHK, their wedding is expected to happen sometime next year.
