Shreyas Iyer Breaks Virat Kohli's Record With Maiden T20I Century

A Blistering Performance In Lucknow

Shreyas Iyer etched his name into the Indian cricket record books on Tuesday. The India captain produced a blistering century against the West Indies in Lucknow. He finished unbeaten on 102 runs from just 43 explosive deliveries. India successfully chased down the 172-run target with eight wickets remaining. His spectacular innings featured 10 fours and six massive sixes. Iyer aggressively attacked the West Indies bowling lineup from the moment he arrived. The incredible performance marked his very first century in T20I cricket. However, he achieved a much bigger historical milestone during the successful run chase.

Surpassing A Cricket Legend

Iyer became the first Indian captain to score a T20I century while chasing a target. He officially surpassed the previous mark set by legendary batter Virat Kohli. Kohli held the record since scoring an unbeaten 94 against the West Indies in 2019. Breaking any record held by Virat Kohli represents a massive athletic achievement. Iyer’s 102 also made him just the third Indian captain to register a T20I century. Rohit Sharma currently leads that elite list with three centuries as captain. Suryakumar Yadav also holds three centuries, including his recent knock against South Africa. Iyer reached his maiden century in truly emphatic, dominant fashion.

Leading From The Front

He combined clean striking with an aggressive approach that overwhelmed the opposition completely. The West Indies bowling attack struggled to find any answers to his power hitting. The victory gave India an early, commanding lead in the highly anticipated series. However, Iyer’s spectacular individual performance clearly served as the absolute headline act. The captain secured a comfortable win and moved past an iconic Indian cricket legend simultaneously. Track the biggest stars and record-breaking performances in international sports.
