Tata Sons Chairman Confirms Interest In Buying Air India

The Tata Group said that it will consider bidding for Air India after the airline carrier was put up for sale by the Indian government. Air India was founded by the Tata Group 85 years ago. The airline was nationalized 64 years.

N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons told a TV channel that they would definitely consider the possibility of bidding for the troubled airlines carrier once the government finalized the privatization process. He added that he was still not clear on the nature of the sale. Tata has already invested in two airline joint ventures in India, one with Singapore Airlines and the second one with AirAsia.

If the deal goes through Tata will acquire the company that it established in 1932 as Tata Airlines by JRD Tata. JRD Tata himself flew the first flight between Bombay and Karachi. Tata Airlines became a public company in 1946 and was renamed Air India.

Air India has a total fleet of 118 aircrafts and according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation data, it flies the highest number of passengers to and from India.
