Video: Indian mahout crushed to death by elephant

The footage shows the carer slipping and falling while hitting the elephant.

In a shocking case in southern India's Kerala, a furious elephant sat on his carer, crushing him to death. The incident occurred when the carer was caning the animal to make it lie down and accidentally slipped and fell just when the elephant decided to follow his carer's instruction.

The CCTV footage shows the carer, identified as Arun Panikkar, 40, striking the elephant with a cane as to try to make it lie down to give its back a wash. The footage shows the carer slipping and falling while hitting the elephant which then sits on his carer who is lying underneath it.

Panikkar is crushed to death and is seen in the footage lying motionless. Moments later another man is seen rushing to help Panikkar and trying to move the elephant, but in vain. The man then runs and gets a huge stick after which the elephant stands up. The man pulls Panikkar's lifeless body from underneath the elephant.

Preliminary examination confirmed Panikkar had been killed instantly and an investigation into the tragedy has been initiated. The elephant was reportedly owned by a local hospital trust, according to reports in Daily Mail.
