Egyptian authorities have seized 30 baby crocodiles discovered inside a passenger’s luggage aboard a train travelling from Aswan to Alexandria. The animals were found while the train stopped at Assiut railway station, raising concerns about the illegal movement of wildlife. The crocodiles measured approximately 20 to 25 centimetres in length. Officials arranged for the animals to be transferred to a protected facility while the necessary legal and environmental procedures were initiated.
Baby Crocodiles Discovered Inside a Passenger’s Bag
The discovery was made after authorities received information about a passenger carrying the young reptiles in a large blue container placed inside a travel bag. The passenger was identified in local reports as an air-conditioning technician. Officials inspected the luggage and confirmed that it contained 30 small crocodiles. A formal report was prepared, and the relevant authorities were notified to investigate the circumstances surrounding their transportation.
Crocodiles Taken to a Wildlife Reserve
Following the discovery, the crocodiles were transferred to Wadi Al-Assiuty Protectorate in Egypt’s Assiut Governorate. Specialists arranged food and appropriate care while the animals were held safely. Reports indicated that three crocodiles died following the discovery, highlighting the risks associated with transporting young wild animals in unsuitable conditions. Authorities are working to ensure that the surviving reptiles receive the necessary attention before any further transfer takes place.
Authorities Plan Return to Natural Habitat
Egyptian environmental officials said the crocodiles are expected to be returned to their natural habitat at Lake Nasser in Aswan, subject to the required legal procedures. The case has renewed attention on the protection of wildlife and efforts to prevent the illegal trade and transportation of wild animals. Officials have stressed the importance of handling rescued species according to established environmental procedures. The investigation also highlights the need to protect vulnerable animals and preserve biodiversity in their natural surroundings.
