What’s The Delay: ATMs Don’t Have 200 Rupee Notes Yet?

As per a statement by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) the first-ever Rs. 200 denomination banknote would be released on 25th August. This note is released to address the issue of small currency denomination shortage. However, it seems that it won’t be available for withdrawal from ATMs for another week at the least. You can get the first batch of the Rs. 200 denomination notes at select banks and RBI branches.

The delay is viewed to be caused because ATM providers don’t know the specification of the new note. They have to test mandatory parameters to make sure that the notes can be introduced to the machines or if any reconfiguration is required. The providers also want to ensure that the currency is not in short supply in order to run their machines at full capacity. The whole process may take a while.
