This 8-YO Syrian Girl Walks On Tin Cans As Prosthetic Legs That Her Father Made For Her

The word 'heartbreaking' will not suffice to describe this young girl's plight. An eight-year-old Syrian girl shows exceptional bravery as she walks on her prosthetic legs that her father made from sardine tins.

Photos show the girl walking around the displacement camp for refugees she currently resides in. Maya Mohammad Ali Merhi and her father were born without legs due to a condition called congenital amputation. The cause of the condition is unknown.

Since her father, Mohammed, couldn't afford real prosthetics, he made a pair out of tin cans filled with cotton and cloths so as to make it easier for Maya to move around.

He told Syria Charity, “I mounted some plastic on two tins of sardines with which she can go to school with. My heart suffers when I see her crawling in front of friends, while they play and run.”

Mohammed himself needs prosthetic legs but he said that even though it's hard, the tin cans are better than nothing. He added that he and his family are leading a quiet life at the camp but he hopes to see his daughter walk properly one day.

As per the statistics of Syria Appeal, over 13 million people in Syria are in a desperate need for aid. And over five million of these people are children, of which Maya is one.

As you read this story today, think about how privileged your life is. Think about Maya and her father and the million other refugees who are living a life of uncertainty. Think about how you can help them.
