Alphabet Shares Plunge 12% as AI Spending Raises Investor Concerns

Weak Earnings and Rising AI Costs Put Pressure on Google's Parent Company

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, suffered a sharp stock market decline on October 29, 2026, as disappointing quarterly results intensified concerns about its growing artificial intelligence (AI) investments. Its shares dropped 12.6%, marking the company's steepest single-day decline since going public in 2004. The fall reportedly wiped around $500 billion from its market value. Investors are increasingly questioning whether the company's massive spending on AI infrastructure will deliver sufficient financial returns.

Revenue Falls Short of Market Expectations

Alphabet reported third-quarter revenue of approximately $127.58 billion, representing a 25% increase compared with the same period last year. However, the figure remained below analysts' expectations of around $128.2 billion. Adjusted earnings per share reached $2.67, missing the forecast of $3.02. Google's search advertising business also delivered weaker-than-expected results, with revenue rising 12% to $63.35 billion. Slower growth in this key segment has raised concerns about the company's ability to maintain its traditional advertising strength.

AI Infrastructure Spending Creates Cash Flow Challenges

The company's expanding investment in data centres, computing capacity and AI technologies has placed additional pressure on its finances. Alphabet recorded negative free cash flow of approximately $9.07 billion during the quarter, significantly below market expectations. The company also acknowledged that AI-powered search features generate lower advertising revenue per query, affecting monetisation. As competition in the AI industry intensifies, investors want clearer evidence that these investments can translate into sustainable profits rather than continued financial pressure.

Google Cloud Growth Offers a Positive Sign

Despite the disappointing results, Google Cloud remained a bright spot, with revenue reaching approximately $30.7 billion and exceeding analysts' forecasts. Demand for cloud services and AI-related products continues to support the division's expansion. However, strong cloud performance was not enough to offset concerns surrounding advertising revenue and rising expenditure. Investors will now closely monitor Alphabet's upcoming earnings, future capital spending plans and efforts to improve AI monetisation. The company's ability to balance innovation with profitability could play a crucial role in restoring market confidence.
