Brazil And India Move To Widen Existing Mercosur Trade Pact

Expanding Preferential Trade Agreements

Brazil and India are moving to substantially expand their existing trade agreement. The two sides recently completed work on the vital terms of reference. This paves the way for negotiations regarding a much broader trade arrangement. Márcio Elias Rosa serves as Brazil’s Minister of Development, Industry and Trade. He stated India is a highly important economic partner for Brazil. He noted the existing trade arrangement remains far too limited currently. Rosa made these remarks on the sidelines of the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting. He spoke with reporters following his meeting with India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.

Building A Broader Commercial Relationship

The officials discussed the possibility of a broad agreement between both economies. Mercosur is the massive South American trade bloc that includes Brazil. Rosa said the existing preferential trade arrangement covers a small number of products. The current agreement only covers 450 specific tariff funds between the nations. He indicated that discussions have advanced to defining the framework for negotiations. Once they define the terms, both sides can build concrete proposals. Rosa described his meeting with the Indian side as excellent overall. He indicated that further work would take place over the coming months.

Deepening Sector Cooperation

The discussions point to a massive effort to broaden the commercial relationship. Both nations want to identify areas where greater market access is possible. The minister identified several sectors where Brazil and India could deepen cooperation. These include the bioeconomy, the circular economy, and the global digital economy. He also referred to artificial intelligence, skills development, and defense during discussions. Developing nations increasingly seek trade partnerships outside traditional Western economic blocs. These agreements help countries navigate fluctuating global markets and supply chain issues. Make informed decisions with the latest data on global commodity markets.
