Coronavirus: Children may be sent to other schools and classes halved as lockdown eases

Children may be sent to other schools and class sizes could be halved under plans to end the UK lockdown, according to a report.

All school students in England will be back in the classroom for a month before the summer break, reports say.

Class sizes will be restricted to 15 with pupils sitting at a distance from each other to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Parents face sending their children to a different school if their current one does not have enough resources.

Ministers have acknowledged that asking children to social distance all day will not work.

Instead they say classrooms should be treated as 'bubbles' and youngsters should not mix with fellow students outside these groups.

Breaks, lunches and drop offs will be staggered through the day to stop different classes mingling, according to new guidance seen by the Sun.

The Times reports the changes mean primary schools may be fully open from June 22.

Pupils and teachers will also be eligible for testing if they show symptoms of Covid-19.

The Government has also reassured parents they will not be fined for not sending their child to school amid safety concerns.

It comes after more than 450,000 people signed a petition demanding the right to keep their children away from schools.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson previously said: "I know how hard schools, colleges, early years settings and parents are working to make sure children and young people can continue to learn at home, and I cannot thank them enough for that.

"But nothing can replace being in the classroom, which is why I want to get children back to school as soon as it is safe to do so.

"The latest scientific advice indicates it will be safe for more children to return to school from 1 June, but we will continue to limit the overall numbers in school and introduce protective measures to prevent transmission."

Teachers have branded the plans 'reckless' with some headteachers refusing to reopen.
