First person dies of coronavirus in New Zealand

A 70-year-old woman has become the first person in New Zealand to die of the novel coroanvirus, the government announced Sunday.

She was admitted to hospital four days ago with what was believed to be influenza complicating an underlying chronic health condition, the government said in a statement.

"As we have seen around the world, Covid-19 can be a deadly disease – particularly for elderly people, and those with underlying pre-existing health issues," the statement said.

"All of our thoughts are with the woman’s family and loved ones at this time."

As of this morning, there were more than 514 cases of the coronavirus in New Zealand, according to Johns Hopkins.
