4. Malik Joyeux – Surfing
In the world of professional surfing, the environment itself becomes your biggest threat. When maneuvering through towering waves that crash down with immense force, one has to make sure they can escape such a hazard. This escape eluded Malik Joyeux at a competition in Honolulu in December of 2005. The Tahitian surfer lost speed going into a big wave and clipped its lip, resulting in his untimely death. The crushing force of the wave broke Joyeux’s board in two and sent the 24-year old plummeting underwater. His body was found 15 minutes later on a beach nearly 100 yards away.
