A Terminally-Ill Doctor Saves His Final Patient by Donating His Corneas

Dr. Chen was an orthopedic specialist for over 30 years.
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
He donated his corneas to save his final patients.

Good doctors genuinely care about their patients regardless of their patients’ circumstances. While medical technology continues to advance, hospital care remains to be a fundamentally human process. Given this , the ability to efficiently and effectively connect with patients has become increasingly important. Doctors are not generally trained in care. in fact, little time is spent during medical training on emotionally connecting with the patient.
However, it is a different case for a doctor in Jiangsu province, China. He had his own way of connecting to his last patient. His connection, however, has become quite literal.

Dr. Chen, deputy director of a hospital, had a specialization for orthopedic care for over 30 years. He was highly-respected in the medical world for his excellence in performing thousands of major surgeries.
However, despite being an expert in medication, an illness still his body. The 52- year-old doctor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July 2016. Though he was suffering, it did not stop her from fulfilling his duties to his patients. Sadly, he became bedridden after a year.

“Mum, since the day I received the acceptance letter from university, I’ve always wanted to contribute to the medical world. This is my last wish, I hope you can agree with me on this, don’t let me leave this world with any regret,” Dr. Chen told his mother and requested to donate his organs to the needy. Because his has condition worsened and the cancer cells have already affected his internal organs , only his corneas were eligible for the donation.

The doctor knew that even a single cornea can make a big change in a person’s life already so he signed the organ donation form on July 27. When he felt like he is already on the verge of falling asleep permanently, he asked the doctors to remove his corneas.

Dr. Chen already passed away, but his genuine care will remain for a lifetime for two men, aged 40 and 50, who received his corneas and reacquired their vision. His medical books will also help a lot of medical practitioners as all were donated to the hospital library.
