When our forefathers built this country, they must have thought about building a society that is financially flourishing, takes good care of its people, encourages art and still manages to preserve its culture. In other words, their plan must be to lay the groundwork for a place that will progress while retaining its basic essence.
Well, we all know how that plan turned out.
Who could’ve thought that the future leaders of our society would gather in groups to sing “Bolna Aunty Aau Kya?” And certainly, nobody would have imagined that there would be a day when cringe pop would become an actual genre of music. But such is the world we live in now.
Dhinchak Pooja, the girl who shot to fame with her single “Swag Wali Topi”, is a celebrated figure today and not in a self-aware way. There was a time when Rakhi Sawant’s charades were seen as publicity seeking maneuvers but would Rakhi’s fate have been the same had she come into the industry today? The barter cost of gaining celebrity-status has gone down considerably and Dhinchak Pooja is another example of the same.
From her videos, Dhinchak Pooja (Pooja Jain) looks like an innocent girl who just recorded a few songs, shot some videos with her friends to match it and put it online. To her surprise, people actually started listening to it, that too on loop. It wasn’t her musical genius that led her to this celebrity status but in fact, it was our taste for so-bad-that-it’s-good that made us look for the Dhinchak girl that everybody was talking about.
Who can blame Dhinchak Pooja when we already have a generation that is tripping on the ever-cringeworthy film, ‘Gunda’?
Dhinchak Pooja’s entry into the Bigg Boss house comes as no surprise. In fact, it feels like the obvious next step for the girl. Nobody knows much about her and everybody would love to pick her apart. Isn’t that what we do with the inmates of the show anyway? A show that is known for bringing 15-minutes of fame to once-upon-a-time celebrities, has transitioned into giving the same fame to commoners like you and me. Dhinchak Pooja though, belongs to neither of these categories.
You might be the kind who looks down upon Bigg Boss but the voyeuristic nature of the show makes sure that it awakens the pados-wali-aunty among every one of us. With regular fights over what might seem like trivial issues, the show ‘entertains’ its audience by showing you the misery of a group of people who are locked inside a house praying that their career will get revived or made once they get out of the show.
Indulgence in any form of entertainment is essentially done to find some catharsis. Bigg Boss attacks that in varied ways. You might judge the people who have voluntarily participated in the show and mock their fights. Or you may actually get invested in their lives and root for a particular contestant. And that is where the show parallels perfectly with Dhinchak Pooja’s celebrity-hood. Pooja’s tracks provide us with some laughs but they also allow us to be a part of the social group that centers its conversation around the trending memes and videos.
With bringing her on board, Bigg Boss has actually played a very smart move because they know what they are aiming for. Bigg Boss is here to cater to the masses and what better way to further loop in your audience by giving them something they can cringe on even further. Or who knows, Pooja might show a dramatically different side of her personality.
