No arms? No problem. How this young man turned tragedy into triumph and became a swimming champion

Success is not determined by physical ability alone, it requires a strong character and courage to defeat all odds and become a winner. Despite losing both arms at 10 years old, Vishwas K.S. is a swimming champion.

The 27-year-old from Bangalore won three medals at the Canadian ‘2016 Speedo Can Am Para-swimming Championships’.

Tragedy struck Vishwas’s family when he was just 10 years old. One afternoon, Vishwas was on the roof of his house curing fresh cement when he lost his balance and slipped.  “My hands were wet and I got pulled into the high-tension wire passing near my house. My father rushed in to save me, but lost his life in the process. I lost both my hands, and parts of my body were charred,“ Vishwas told Times of India.

The accident left Vishwas in a coma for a month and after being hospitalized for 2 months, he was finally able to come home. But that was just the beginning of the newfound challenges that lie ahead for this young man. Once home, it took a lot of time and inner strength to keep his head up and move on with his life. A few years after the accident Vishwas lost his mother as well but these tragedies didn’t diminish his zest for life.

Swimming is not the only thing that Vishwas does, he’s also a very good dancer and practices Kung Fu. He was recently featured in a special calendar dedicated to amputee sportspersons of India and Vishwas’s shot went viral.

“I am blessed with great friends. They helped me write exams, and I was able to finish my BCom. They stayed in my life and taught me to be winner,“ he said.

He’s currently training for an India level swimming championship and hopes to win the gold medal for this years international event. He also wishes to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. This young man has made it clear that there’s no room for ‘self-doubt’ in his life and lives up to his own name ‘Vishwas’ which means ‘trust’ in Hindi.
