A citizen was arrested after immoral photos and videos circulated through social media, according to the Royal Oman Police.
The ROP said in a statement online, "The police has kept an eye on what has been published and circulated on social media regarding immoral videos and photos of an Omani man and an expat woman."
ROP added: "It was found that the woman published these clips after she left the Sultanate. The citizen has been identified and he was apprehended, and the legal proceedings are currently underway."
The photos and videos mentioned were of an immoral nature and interfered with the public morality of the country, according to the police.
Dr Duwaib Hussain Saber, associate Professor of General Law at Assiut University in Egypt and Legal Consultant at Dr Tariq Al Busaidi Legal Consultancy, said to Times of Oman, "Specialised laws override general laws, and so it is apparent that this case would fall under Oman's Cyber Crime Law. Furthermore, it would also be a mistake for anyone to spread this media through social media networks, since that would also infringe upon the law."
According to Article 268 of the law, any person who uses online means to produce, spread, or buy content that interferes with public moral behaviour can be punished with between 3 months and 3 years in prison and/or a fine of no less than OMR100 and no more than OMR3000.
