Sharjah Ruler pardons 377 prisoners ahead of Ramadan

Inmates from other countries will be sent back home.

His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, has ordered the release of 377 prisoners of different nationalities from the punitive and reformative institutions in the Emirate of Sharjah, ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.

Major Saif Al Zeri, Al Shamsi, Commander in Chief of Sharjah Police said that the pardoned inmates are subject to amnesty on the basis of good conduct. He expressed his thanks and appreciation to the Ruler of Sharjah for this generous gesture.

The pardon comes within the framework of the Ruler of Sharjah's keenness to give the pardoned prisoners a chance to start a new life and alleviate the suffering of their families. 

Speaking to Khaleej Times, a top official at Sharjah Reformatory and Punitive Establishments of Sharjah Police Department, said that 377 inmates is a big number compared to the previous year. Most inmates were involved in financial crimes like bounced cheques or failing of paying, and debts. They have shown good conduct during their short-term jail period, he said. He added that the number of inmates with good conduct has been increasing due to rehabilitation programs being carried by Sharjah Police in coordination with the Ministry of Interior.

 

Inmates from other countries will be sent back home.

A Sudanese national Reem, a daughter of an inmate, expressed her happiness with the news of her mother coming back home, she hailed Sheikh Sultan and Sharjah Police's efforts in reuniting families.

She said that her mother was involved in a bounced cheque case and was sentenced for six months in jail. "Thank God now my mother will join us in our beloved country in Sudan and will contribute to the ongoing revolution against the ousted government which forced our family to leave home seeking safety from their assault," she said.
