Former US Open champion Graeme McDowell has confirmed that he will not continue with LIV Golf as the breakaway circuit prepares for a proposed revamp ahead of the 2027 season. The Northern Irish golfer announced his decision on October 26, bringing his four-year association with the league to an end. McDowell, who joined LIV Golf before its inaugural tournament in 2022, thanked the organisation and those who supported him during his time there. He also indicated that he was looking forward to the next stage of his professional career.
McDowell Declines LIV Golf's Proposed Relaunch
The 47-year-old shared his decision in a social media statement, confirming that he would not pursue the proposed LIV 2.0 format. Although he expressed appreciation for the opportunities he received over the previous four years, he did not reveal his immediate plans for the future. McDowell joined the league in 2022 after establishing himself as one of golf's prominent international players. His decision comes at a crucial moment for LIV Golf, which is working to secure its future and prepare a revised competition structure for the 2027 campaign.
Former US Open Winner Joins Growing Exit List
McDowell won the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach and has enjoyed a successful career across professional golf. During his LIV Golf spell, he represented several teams, including Cleeks, Smash and OKGC, but did not secure an individual title. His best result on the circuit was a joint second-place finish at LIV Golf Virginia in 2025. Several established players have also decided against joining the proposed new format, including Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Ian Poulter, Louis Oosthuizen and Tom McKibbin. Their departures have raised further questions about the league's player line-up for next season.
LIV Golf's Future Remains Uncertain
LIV Golf is facing a significant transition after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced that it would end its financial backing following the 2026 season. The organisation has since pursued alternative funding, secured financing from BC Partners Credit and entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the United States. A proposed relaunch under the LIV 2.0 name is being considered for 2027, although several players have chosen not to continue. McDowell has yet to confirm where he will compete next. A possible return to the DP World Tour has been discussed previously, but his future schedule remains unclear.
