The Netherlands men's national football team officially has a brand new leader. The Royal Dutch Football Association proudly appointed Xavi Hernández as head coach. The former Barcelona manager signed a solid four-year contract on Wednesday. He will boldly guide the team through the highly anticipated 2030 World Cup. He returns to management for the first time since leaving Barcelona.

A Historic Appointment

Xavi actively replaces Ronald Koeman at the helm of the national squad. Morocco brutally eliminated Koeman's team during the 2026 World Cup tournament. Xavi becomes the first foreign coach to lead the Dutch since 1978. The 46-year-old manager politely called the prestigious new role a tremendous personal honor. The association also briefly considered former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot previously.

The Barcelona Connection

Xavi possesses a deep, historical connection to the Dutch football philosophy. Legendary Dutch coaches Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels heavily influenced his career. Xavi deeply appreciates the traditional Dutch style of attacking, possession-based football. He wants the team to play with intense passion and high creativity. He views himself as a son of Dutch football because of those influences.

Xavi brings massive playing and coaching experience to the Dutch squad. He made 767 appearances for Barcelona as a brilliant, highly effective midfield maestro. He helped Spain win the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships. He also successfully guided Barcelona to a La Liga title as head coach. Xavi will begin his intensive preparations for the upcoming international fixtures immediately.
