Russia did not intend to compete with US over Syria: Russian FM

(TASS) Russia did not intend to compete with the United States for the role of the leader during talks on settlement in Syria, all efforts were a sincere attempt to find a peaceful solution to the problem, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told RT.

"It was not a game of who is stronger and who is wiser. It was a sincere attempt, over a year, to find a peaceful solution to the Syrian problem," Zakharova said.

"We were not going to compete with the United States, we spoke for cooperation. We spent over 6 months with our American counterparts, developing provisions on which we would have no differences," she told the television channel.

Zakharova said that "now it is absolutely clear" that the United States has no single position on the Syrian issue, which became the key problem during talks between the countreis.

"It is clear that there are certain forces, groups of people, parties, who support one option of the issue’s solution, and other groups of people, who defend the opposite viewpoint. They imagine the opposite vision of what’s going on in Syria. This is in my view the key reason why the United States failed to fulfill the agreements it had signed," she said.

On October 3, U.S. Department of State spokesman John Kirby said that the United States suspends the use of bilateral channels with Russia that were established to maintain the ceasefire regime in Syria.
