5 Specialised Search Alternatives to Google

If you want to find something over the internet, you will just google it. In fact, Google's prominence over search is so dominant that we are now even using the verb 'google' to search local files saved on devices. However, Google's business model and its gigantic size make it little courteous to users' privacy. In fact, there are so many other specialized search engines that can do a better job in certain types of web searches than Google. So if you are someone with privacy concerns, Google has too much of your data, or just want to try a new search engine, here are 5 alternatives.

1. Duckduck Go

Duckduck Go is one of the fastest-growing search engines that focus on user privacy. It is built on the open-source platform and doesn't collect or sell any of data from your search history. Unlike Google, Duckduck Go doesn't rely on a single source to find answers to the queries. Its search results are powered by 400 different individual sources. And, if you don't like shifting through multiple pages of search results, then Duckduck go provides a page of single infinite scrolling results.

2. StartPage

StartPage is another privacy-focused search engine. StartPage give you the best of both worlds: Google search results, with complete privacy protection. StartPage also offers to protect you from 'filter bubbles'. While other search engines deliver results based on what they know about you rather than giving you equal access to the internet, StartPage provides users the search results without any 'personalization'.

3. Bing

Bing is the second-biggest search engine after Google and they are owned by Microsoft. Although they claim the second place in the search engine race, they are light years behind Google in terms of user numbers. Unlike other search engines in this list, Bing is aesthetically pleasing with beautiful photos on the homepage. Bing is literally a like for like Google replacement in every way.

4. Yippy

Yippy is a search engine developed by the folks at Carnegie Mellon University. It was found in 2009 and it provides deeper searches as opposed to broader results provided by other search engines. Yippy uses the conventional search engines to find pages that are harder to find generally, and users can further narrow down the search results.

5. Wolfram Alpha

Calling Wolfram Alpha another search engine will be a gross injustice to this powerful service. Wolfram Alpha is a computational knowledge engine. What this means, it gives straightforward answers to your queries in a clutter-free, clean layout. It gives you access to the world's facts and data and calculates answers across a range of topics, including science and mathematics.
