Driver arrested after man seriously injured in UAE hit-and-run

UAE Police have arrested Driver in connection with a serious hit-and-run in Ras Al Khaimah.

According to Ras Al Khaimah Police, a pedestrian reported that the driver fled the scene after knocking down a biker, accident happened at around 4pm on Monday

 

The Emirati man was riding his motorbike when an Asian driver ran him over with a silver pick-up truck.

The truck driver quickly left the scene and failed to help the seriously injured biker.

Col. Ahmad Al Naqbi, director of Traffic and Patrols Department, said that the central operations room immediately dispatched a traffic patrol unit, an ambulance and paramedics to the scene.

Within three hours of the reported incident, police were able to identify and arrest the fugitive driver.

Col. Al Naqbi said, “The biker was gravely wounded and transferred to hospital for treatment. The truck driver has since been arrested, and the case referred to the concerned authorities where further legal action will be pursued."

He added out that hit-and-run incidents is a crime in the UAE, and motorists who run away from traffic accidents will be heavily penalized for their negligence and irresponsible behavior.  

As per the UAE federal traffic law, amended in July 2017, a fine of Dh500 and eight black points shall be slapped against any driver who does not stop after causing an accident that resulted in injuries with a light vehicle. In case of a heavy vehicle, a fine of Dh1,000 and 16 black points would be imposed on the driver. In both cases, the vehicle involved shall be impounded for seven days.
