Expanding The Role Of Veterinary Medicine
Veterinary medicine in the UAE moves far beyond the standard examination room. A new generation of locally trained vets is preparing for complex careers. They will work across food safety, disease surveillance, and public health. Gulf Medical University recently held an inaugural white coat ceremony in Ajman. They cloaked their very first class of future veterinary doctors. The students belong to the Thumbay College of Veterinary Medicine. Professor Mohammad Khalifeh serves as the dean of the new college. He stated the programme produces more than just standard clinical practitioners.
The First Line Of Defense
"Most new infectious diseases in people start in animals," Khalifeh explained. Vets are often the first to see a dangerous outbreak coming. Local training gives students a deep understanding of unique regional conditions. They learn about the specific animals, farms, and markets in the UAE. The programme aims to strengthen cooperation between different human health professions. Veterinary students learn on the same campus as future human doctors. This follows the World Health Organization’s “One Health” medical model. Protecting animals directly protects the people living in the surrounding community.
Supporting Food Security And Welfare
Veterinarians play a crucial role in maintaining national food security. They inspect meat products and monitor diseases in food-producing animals. They also monitor antibiotic use on commercial farms very closely. The five-year programme includes 1,980 hours of vital clinical contact. Students learn to treat companion animals, camels, falcons, and livestock. The UAE possesses a growing pet sector and strong wildlife conservation goals. The college hopes graduates will view animal rescue as a real specialty. The country needs more professionals dedicated to improving local animal welfare.
