Islam imposes a law of punishment for a person in case he has harmed any other person the same way the victim got suffered. It is mentioned in Holy Quran and practiced by Holy Prophet PBUH that eye for eye, hand for hand and life for life has to be sacrificed in order to seek justice for victim. The Saudi jurisprudence is based on Islamic principles of justice and war. In case of a murder of a person, in case the victim’s family takes blood money and forgives the murderer, there is an exception to this principal. But again the murderer is at risk as wherever the victim changes its decision, he may ask for equal punishment instead of blood money. A strange case of death imprisonment happened in KSA where the oldest prisoner executed after a long duration of wait for prisoner. Abdullah Fandi Al-Shammary was the oldest prisoner who was executed for being convicted of murder of his neighbor.
The incident happened when he was just 19 years old. He was inside his home, when suddenly a fight broke out among neighbors, few youngsters started the quarrel and within seconds it changed into a deadly incident. Abdullah in furry hit the victim’s head with a big stick repeatedly and did not stop until the victim completely collapsed. He was immediately arrested and the case proceeded on. After five years of imprisonment, he was proved guilty and the court gave its verdict for his death sentence. At that time, the murderer offered blood money to the victim’s family which they accepted. He got released and went towards a normal life. Apparently it seemed that the case is closed and he got married. But two years later, he was re-arrested on the appeal of victim’s family and the cases started again.
He was again presented in front of court, followed the procedure and at the end was declared guilty again and the court announced death punishment for him. He had one daughter of two years old. He spent 32 years of his life in imprisonment and is executed last week at the age of 54. He spent the whole time of his life while making appeals and trying to convince victim’s family that he has admitted his mistake and is ready to compensate them in any way.
His all efforts went in vain and the victim’s son did not agree to the loss he borne due to death of his father. He remained of opinion that his father’s killer should be hanged on. People showed sympathy for him not inside the imprisonment cell but also on social media. He during his stay in jail memorized Holy Quran and his jail mates cried over his death. He offered Morning Prayer and hugged everyone with a smile on face while leaving for execution.
He received thousands of tweets on social media where people showed their concern and sympathy for him. His death was set like this otherwise even Prince Abdulaziz tried to convince victim’s son for his forgiveness which he refused. May his soul rest in heavens and Allah forgive him for his mistakes!
