Air India to discontinue international laundry service for flight crew from July 1

Air India has announced that it will discontinue its complimentary laundry service for pilots and cabin crew during international layovers from 1 July as part of its ongoing cost-cutting and operational efficiency measures. 


According to an internal communication, the airline said the existing laundry service for domestic layovers will remain unchanged, while crew members staying overseas will instead be provided with an iron and ironing board in their hotel rooms. 


Employees who require additional uniform sets can also request them through the airline's internal portal before their scheduled assignments. However, the airline clarified that complimentary laundry services will continue during international flight diversions and overseas simulator or classroom training sessions.

Some employees questioned whether the move aligns with Air India's ambition to compete with leading Gulf carriers such as Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways, while others argued that the cost savings may be minimal compared to the airline's broader financial challenges.

The policy comes as the Tata Group-owned carrier continues its long-term transformation plan focused on improving operational efficiency, modernising its fleet, expanding its network, and working towards sustainable profitability.
